Be aware of ‘photokeratitis’ when unprotected exposure to strong sunlight
From the first day of June, the highest daytime temperature in many parts of the country exceeded 30 degrees, and July entered full-blown summer. Along with the heat wave came the intense sunlight. The time has come when it is more necessary than ever to prepare for “photokeratitis,” in which both eyes burn along with various heat-related diseases such as heat stroke.
Photokeratitis is simply a burn of the cornea. It can appear when you are active for a certain amount of time with your bare eyes exposed to intense ultraviolet rays. The problem is that at the moment of being burned, special symptoms do not appear, so you are unaware of the timing of the injury. However, after about half a day, the eyes start to sting as if sand had entered, and with pain, sore eyes, redness, tear secretion, and blurred vision.
Photokeratitis may not be immediately suspected due to situations such as a slight time difference between the time of burn occurrence and the time when symptoms are felt, so that the eyes become itchy only after returning home after going out. For this reason, if symptoms appear, even if the sun is not shining, it is good to think about the place where you go out and suspect it.
If photokeratitis is neglected, there is a risk of secondary bacterial infection progressing through the damaged cornea. It can also cause other dangerous complications such as macular degeneration and cataracts, so if you suspect the symptoms of photokeratitis, it's good to go to the hospital and get tested right away. In the summer when the hot sun is burning, we introduce UV blocking contact lenses to protect your eyes from UV rays this summer.
