Why Are Contacts As Clear As Glasses

In Korea, where there is a particularly high myopia population, people prefer glasses as the most common and convenient vision correction method. However, for various reasons, the number of people who prefer contact lenses is also increasing. Eyeglasses and contact lenses are still popular means of vision correction for children and adolescents who cannot undergo vision correction surgery, as well as adults who are reluctant to undergo vision correction surgery.

The choice of eyeglasses or contact lenses is completely personal. You can decide by considering all factors such as lifestyle, comfort, convenience, purchase budget, and aesthetic aspects. It cannot be determined which of the two is superior because each has its strengths and weaknesses for vision correction, ease of use, and eye health.

First of all, the glasses do not come into contact with the eyes directly during removal, so there is no worry of infection or side effects. It also acts as a barrier to prevent wind, dust, and dirt from entering the eyes. If your eyes are dry and sensitive, glasses are more effective.

However, there are some people who are reluctant to wear glasses because they do not suit them. Moreover, if you wear it for a long time, your nose and ears, which are the parts that the glasses touch, become uncomfortable, and when it rains or the temperature changes rapidly, water droplets and steam form on the glasses lenses and interfere with your vision.

Contact lenses are manufactured to fit the curvature (curvature) of the cornea, so they have a wider field of view than eyeglasses and do not distort vision. Eyeglasses are about 12mm away from the eye, so objects look smaller than they actually are due to the concave lens effect, but contact lenses appear to be the actual size and are much clearer than glasses.

Also, when enjoying sports or outdoor activities, glasses can be cumbersome and intrusive, but lenses do not. Rather, soft contact lenses are safe for intense sports activities. You don't have to worry about sweat in the summer or fogging in the winter.

Among contact lenses, RGP lenses (hard lenses) can correct high myopia, corneal astigmatism, or irregular astigmatism that cannot be corrected with glasses. In particular, dream lenses are worn during sleep and removed in the morning to correct vision with the cornea pressed down during the night, enabling daily life without glasses during the day and inhibiting the progression of myopia in children and adolescents.

On the other hand, contact lenses also have disadvantages. Since the lenses cover the cornea and oxygen supply is not smooth, when worn for a long time, dry eye syndrome may become severe and side effects may occur. Those who want to wear lenses for a long time can consider soft lenses and RGP lenses (hard lenses) made of a different material. Soft lenses are advantageous if you use them irregularly only on necessary days, and RGP lenses are effective for eye health if you want to wear them all the time.

Contact lenses need to be cleaned and managed hygienically to prevent infection or side effects. If it is cumbersome to take care of your lenses, you can use disposable contact lenses.

Wearing glasses also helps. When you want to temporarily stop wearing lenses or when inflammation occurs, you can replace them with glasses during the treatment period. Also, if you wear glasses and contact lenses alternately depending on the outfit, you can express yourself more individually.
