Toric Colored Contacts & Circle lens (Astigmatism)

What Are Toric Contact Lenses And Why Are More People Wearing Them?

If you're looking for a new pair of contact lenses, you may have heard about toric lenses. But what exactly are they?

A toric contact lens is a contact lens that's shaped in a particular way. Standard contact lenses have a spherical surface, much like a slice of the side of a beach ball. On the other hand, a torus is a geometric shape that is more like a donut. So, a toric lens is shaped like a slice of the side of a donut, rather than a beach ball. Because, like anything accessory, the most important thing is fit.

This unique shape creates different focusing powers for different orientations. Rather than having one refractive strength or power of vision correction that changes gradually across the lens (like standard lenses), there are multiple refractive strengths across the lens (like those found on progressive lenses). This allows your eyes to adjust quickly and easily—just as they might when wearing glasses with multiple prescriptions!

How Are Colored Contacts Different From Regular Lenses?

Regular, or spherical, contacts have the same prescription power in all meridians. That means they can rotate or spin on the eye while you blink without causing any vision problems. Toric contact lenses, on the other hand, have different powers in different meridians to account for varying degrees of myopia or hyperopia that characterizes astigmatism.

This variance in myopia or hyperopia is caused by different curvatures in the lens or cornea of your eye. This depends on whether you have regular, corneal or lenticular astigmatism. The difference in refraction between the horizontal and vertical planes of your eye leads to blurry vision and difficulty seeing details.

To address this issue, toric lenses are shaped to provide different refracting powers and are weighted in some areas to stabilize the lens to its proper orientation when worn. Clearly, the design of toric lenses is very complicated and specialized to your individual vision needs. In other words, they are custom-made for you! And what’s better than eyewear tailor-made for your eye shape and vision needs?
